He Quiets My Anxiety
“When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul.”
Psalm 94:19 (NASB)
Have you ever experienced such anxiety inside that it feels like a multitude of voices are overcrowding your mind? Loud and seemingly uncontrollable. I think we’ve all been there at different times in our lives and for some of us, it’s seemingly a never-ending cycle.
Worry and anxiety comes with a sense of uneasiness about the future or an outcome. It’s rooted in fear and ultimately stems from a lack of trust in God. If we are not trusting God then our trust is in ourselves. And in that our initial reaction is to have this need for control in order to protect ourselves.
Somehow in our pride, we have ourselves convinced that we can prevent what we are fearful of from happening. The truth is, we don’t always have control over what an outcome will be. And that’s the part that shakes us up inside. Can you think of a time when you worried so much about something and then the outcome ended up not being bad at all? Did the worry and anxiety change anything or bring you comfort in between? For me personally, whenever I have worried or thought I had a sense of control it has never brought me genuine comfort in the midst of my fearful moments.
How do we release control and lay down our pride? How do we stop anxiety from overtaking our hearts and minds?
When choose to humble ourselves and release control, we push fear out of the way with faith. Faith is having complete trust in God, leaving the outcomes in His hands. Remind yourself that no matter what the outcome is, God will walk you through it. You are in His hands. Life circumstances don’t change that fact.
When we choose to put our trust completely in Him, He is able to bring complete peace and comfort to our restless souls. A scripture that brings comfort to me in the midst of my anxiety is Psalm 46:10 (NASB). It says “Cease striving and know that I am God.” His word reminds us to stop, release, and trust. He is God, and He is with us.
As we bring our concerns and worries to Him, He replaces them with His peace in our hearts. Fear is replaced by faith. Control is replaced with trust. Trust in His love for us. He is able to hold us up through anything and everything.
The key to overcoming fear and anxiety is faith and trust. The more you grow in your relationship with God as you decide to surrender to Jesus, the more He is going to stretch and grow us in these areas. Trust in His love, knowing that His intentions toward us are only ever good.
“Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].” (Philippians 4:6-7 AMP)
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” (1 John 4:18)
